SC refuses to order status quo on publication of Bihar caste survey data, The Hindu
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the Bihar government from publishing data collected from its caste-based survey, The Hindu reports. Months ahead of the general elections, the Bihar government had published data revealing that the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and the Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) between them constitute 63 percent of the State’s population. The report says that a Bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna refused to be bothered by the fact that the State had outed the data when petitions challenging the legality of the survey was pending before the Supreme Court. Jailed Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi wins Nobel Peace Prize
Narges Mohammadi, a jailed Iranian human rights activist, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, BBC reports. The head of the Nobel committee lauded Mohammadi's fight against the oppression of women in the country, saying she was a "freedom fighter". The activist is currently serving a lengthy sentence in Tehran's notorious Evin prison. The report adds that the committee said it hoped Iran would soon release her. Her family said the award was a "historic and profound moment for Iran's fight for freedom". Read the full report here.
India Today: Drunk man urinates on elderly couple onboard train in UP
A man urinated on an elderly couple travelling in the Uttar Pradesh Sampark Kranti train. As per India Today, the incident occurred after the couple had an altercation with the man over consuming alcohol during the journey. The retired scientist couple, hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was traveling in an AC-3 coach of the train. According to the allegations, another passenger travelling in the compartment was drinking alcohol during the journey. This led to a confrontation between the man, identified as Ritesh, and the couple. In the heat of the argument, Ritesh allegedly urinated on the couple's berth, the report says. Philippine airports on high alert after anonymous warning: The Straits Times
The Straits Times reports that the Philippines has placed all its commercial airports on heightened alert after an anonymous warning that bombs could go off on planes headed out of Manila to some places including several tourist hotspots. “Immediate enhanced security measures” were being implemented at 42 commercial airports across the country, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said, as per the report. India's Perfect 100: NDTV on India at Asian Games 2023
The Indian contingent is now certain to cross the 100-medal mark at the Asian Games 2023. NDTV reports this is the first time that India will be breaching the triple-figure mark in the Asian Games medal tally. India have already won 95 medals with seven other medals assured, it adds. This is also the first time in the history of the Asian Games that won more than 20 gold medals, as per the report. This 19th Asian Games has been historic for India in many other terms as well.
