India considering new law for migrants' safety amid US deportation row, NDTV reports
The Centre is "seriously considering" enacting a new law to establish a framework which will promote "safe, orderly and regular migration for overseas employment", NDTV reports. This move comes amid a row over the United States deporting over a hundred Indian migrants who landed in Amritsar yesterday on a C-17 US military aircraft, chained and shackled. The tentatively titled 'Overseas Mobility (Facilitation and Welfare) Bill, 2024' emerged from a report presented in Lok Sabha by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, headed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, on Monday, the report adds. The migrants, 104 in total and hailing from various states, were rounded up in a sweeping crackdown on the so-called illegal immigration in the US. Read the full report here.
Indian Express on an interfaith couple's nightmare in Uttarakhand
This Indian Express report narrates the nightmares that an interfaith couple in Uttarakhand faced after submitting a notice about the same as per established procedure. When Mohammad Shanu (22) and Akansha Kandari (23) submitted a notice on January 7 at the sub-district magistrate’s office in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar stating their intention to marry. However, the report says hat their notice, complete with personal details went viral on social media. The incident occurred despite the police protection given to the couple on Uttarakhand High Court’s December 16 orders. despite the orders, the report adds, they continue to face opposition from right-wing groups. UN says over 100 women raped and burned alive in DR Congo jailbreak, BBC
More than 100 female prisoners were raped and then burned alive during a jailbreak in the Congolese city of Goma, BBC reports according to the UN. Hundreds of prisoners broke out of Munzenze prison last Monday, after fighters from the M23 rebel group began to take over the city. Between 165 and 167 women were assaulted by male inmates during the jailbreak, BBC says as per an internal UN document. The Hindu's live updates on Parliament Budget Session Day 5
The Congress on Thursday gave a notice to move an adjournment motion demanding a discussion on the “inhumane” way Indians were deported from the United States, which was not admitted. Opposition MPs protest outside Samvidhan Sadan (old Parliament building) over the manner in which the deportations took place. The Hindu reports that External Affairs Minister S. Israel withdraws from UN Human Rights Council in sync with the US: TeleSUR
In a significant decision, Israel has announced its withdrawal from the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, a move supported by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. TeleSUR reports that this action comes shortly after former US President Donald Trump signed an order withdrawing the United States from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and the Council itself. Saar expressed his support for Trump’s decision through his account on the social media platform X, stating that Israel joins the US in this withdrawal. The report says the minister criticised the Council, arguing that it has focused on attacking Israel, a democratic country, and has fostered antisemitism instead of promoting human rights.
