Hindustan Times on Delimitation row: Stalin takes ‘lip service’ jibe at BJP
Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Wednesday called for the 1971 census to be the basis of delimitation due in 2026 at an all-party meeting he had chaired in Chennai, Hindustan Times reports. MK Stalin alleged that the BJP-led union government paid mere lip service to Tamil language for the sake of votes and dubbed the ruling party at the Centre as Tamil's "enemy." In the meeting, attended by almost all major parties in the state, the report says that Stalin warned that population based delimitation will reduce the Lok Sabha seats for Tamil Nadu. Donald Trump announces reciprocal tariffs from April 2: Indian Express
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday once again targetted India for its high tariffs, Indian Express reports, signalling that negotiations for a trade deal may not yield concessions for New Delhi on sweeping levies such as reciprocal tariffs, which are set to take effect from April 2. He singled out the auto sector, where he said India charges tariffs of over a 100 percent. “India charges us 100 per cent tariffs; the system is not fair to the US, it never was. On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in," Trump said while addressing a Joint Session of the US Congress. Florida opens criminal investigation into Tate brothers, BBC reports
Florida has launched a criminal investigation into British-American influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate, who flew to the state last week from Romania, where they faced rape and human-trafficking charges. BBC reports that Florida's attorney general, James Uthmeier, said investigators have issued search warrants and subpoenas as part of a "now-active" inquiry. In the US, the brothers also face a civil suit from a woman alleging they coerced her into sex work, and then defamed her after she gave evidence to Romanian authorities, the report adds. Two consecutive earthquakes, including one of 5.7 magnitude, rocked Manipur on Wednesday, NDTV reports. The tremors were felt across the Northeast, officials said. The earthquake of 5.7 magnitude struck the state at 11.06 am. Its epicentre was 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district, and at a depth of 110 km, according to officials of the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong. Millions of people on Australia’s east coast are bracing for their first tropical cyclone in more than five decades, Al Jazeera reports, as authorities urge residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate their homes. Storm warnings affected millions of people on Wednesday along more than 500km of coastline in the states of Queensland and New South Wales amid warnings that Tropical Cyclone Alfred could bring winds of up to 155km/h. Alfred is expected to land as a Category 2 storm early on Friday morning near Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city, the report says.
