Bangladesh orders indefinite ban on IPL telecast, India Today

The Bangladesh government has ordered an indefinite ban on the telecast and promotion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the controversy surrounding the removal of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad, India Today reports. In an official communication issued on January 5, the authorities confirmed that all IPL-related broadcasts, promotions and event coverage have been suspended with immediate effect and will remain so until further orders. Supreme Court denies bail to Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, The Hindu reports

 

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act related to the alleged “larger conspiracy” behind the February 2020 riots in the national capital, The Hindu reports. A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria, while underscoring the seriousness of the allegations levelled against the two activists, observed that they stood “on a qualitatively different footing” compared to the other accused in the case. It, however, allowed the release of five other co-accused, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd. Trump repeats threat to annex Danish territory, BBC reports

BBC reports that US President Donald Trump has again proposed annexing Greenland, after Denmark's leader urged him to "stop the threats" over the island. Speaking to reporters, the US president said "we need Greenland from the standpoint of national security". The report adds that Trump has repeatedly raised the prospect of the semi-autonomous Danish territory becoming an annexed part of the US, citing its strategic location for defence purposes and mineral wealth. Hindustan Times: Gurmeet Ram Rahim walks out on 40-day parole, 15th release since rape conviction

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving a 20-year jail term for raping two of his disciples, walked out of Sunaria jail on Monday after being granted a 40-day parole. Hindustan Times reports that this is the 15th time he has been released since his conviction in 2017. Singh and three others were also convicted in 2019 for the murder of a journalist more than 16 years ago. Read the full report here.

 

Venezuela invites Trump to build peace and cooperation instead of war, TeleSUR reports

 

The Venezuelan interim president Delcy Rodriguez called the US government to move toward a “a balanced and respectful international relationship” and between Venezuela and the countries of the Region, based on sovereign equality and non-interference. TeleSUR reports that Rodriguez highlighted that sovereign equality and non-interference are the principles that guide the Venezuelan diplomacy with the rest of the world. The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice ordered that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez assume the presidency of Venezuela to ensure administrative continuity and the defense of the nation, after a foreign military aggression that resulted in the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro, the report adds.
