Supreme Court orders CBI-monitored SIT probe in Tirupati laddu row: Indian Express
The Supreme Court on Friday ordered a new “independent” Special Investigation Team (SIT) monitored by the Director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Indian Express reports, to probe into the allegations of adulterated ghee being used in laddus distributed at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati under the previous YSRCP government. The new SIT team will comprise two officers each from the CBI and Andhra Pradesh state police, and a senior officer of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), according to a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan. Directing the investigation by the new SIT, the bench clarified that it has not gone into the allegations and counter allegations in either of the petitions or the stand of the respondent, the report adds. Maharashtra assembly Dy Speaker jumps onto safety net at Mantralaya, livemint
Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and at least two tribal legislators jumped off the third floor of the Mantralaya building and landed on the safety nets on Friday afternoon, livemint reports. Zirwal and the others were protesting against the inclusion of the Dhangar community in the quota for tribals. The report adds that none of the protesters were seriously injured in the incident. Dhangars, a shepherd community from western Maharashtra and Marathwada region, have been demanding inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category. Read the full report here.
Al Jazeera on 18 killed in Israeli strike on West Bank’s Tulkarem refugee camp
At least 18 people have been killed in an Israeli air attack on the Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera reports as per the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The Israeli military said that its fighter jets had carried out the attack on Thursday in coordination with Israel’s internal security service, the Shin Bet. Footage verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency showed scenes of devastation in the camp, located northwest of Nablus in the north of the West Bank. Read the full report here.
Three top Bengaluru colleges receive bomb-threat mails, Hindustan Times
Three top colleges in Bengaluru—BMS College, MS Ramaiah College and BIT College—have been placed on high alert following a bomb threat received on Friday, Hindustan Times reported. The report says that a bomb disposal squad and other related teams are currently verifying the threat, according to DCP South. A case has been registered at the Hanumanthnagar Police Station to trace the source of the threat. Read the full report here.
Massive blasts in Beirut after renewed Israeli air strikes, BBC reports
BBC reports that Israeli bombing caused large explosions in Beirut, including one close to the international airport during a further night of air strikes targeting Hezbollah. The airport borders Dahieh, Hezbollah's stronghold in the capital. Plumes of smoke could be seen over the city on Friday morning. US outlets citing Israeli officials reported the target was Hashem Safieddine, a cousin of Hezbollah's former leader Hassan Nasrallah. Safieddine has been widely regarded as the most likely candidate to replace Nasrallah after his death in an Israeli strike last week, the report adds. Lebanon's public health ministry said 37 people had been killed in ground and air attacks in the last 24 hours while 151 others had been wounded. Read the full report here.
