SC overrules 1998 order granting immunity to legislators in bribery cases, Indian Express reports
A seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Monday disagreed with and overruled its 1998 judgment, Indian express reports. The 1998 judgment gave legislators immunity from bribery charges in connection with votes made in Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. As further mentioned in the report, in 1998, a five-judge bench in PV Narasimha Rao v State (CBI/SPE) held that legislators enjoy immunity from criminal prosecution for bribery, the judgment was delivered with a 3:2 majority. "The interpretation in Narsimha Rao (judgment) is contrary to Articles 105(2) and 194 of the Indian constitution," CJI DY Chandrachud while delivering the judgment noted. Read the full report here.
TeleSur on the deaths of at least 10 recent deaths of children by starvation in Gaza
At least 10 children have died in recent days from dehydration and malnutrition in a hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, reports TeleSur according to UNICEF. Kamal Adwan Hospital, in the north of the enclave, has almost 16 percent of children under two suffer from acute malnutrition. UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Adele Khodr stated that there are likely to be more children fighting for their lives in some of the few hospitals left in Gaza while stressing that many others cannot receive any attention due to the destruction of the health infrastructure, says the report. NDTV report: Supreme Court raps MK Stalin's son on Sanatana row
Supreme Court on Monday slammed Tamil Nadu Minister and son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin Udhayanidhi Stalin for his controversial statement relating to Sanatandharma. NDTV reports, while speaking in a conference in September 2023, Udhayanidhi advocated the "eradication" of Sanatana Dharma. The two-member bench of the court questioned the minister's decision to approach the top court after making inflammatory remarks and stated to him that he should be well aware of the consequences of his words as a minister, says the report. The Hindu on Chandigarh Municipal Corporation repolls
Over a month after the drama over Mayoral post-elections, BJP's candidates won the post of Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor in repolls in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, as per the report by The Hindu. BJP’s Rajinder Sharma and Kuljeet Singh Sandhu have won the posts of Deputy Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor respectively today. The report says both of the candidates got 19 votes and defeated the AAP-Congress alliance. The result was announced by the Mayor, the report says. Read the full report here.
Nikki Haley beats Donald Trump in Washington DC for first primary victory, BBC
BBC reports that Nikki Haley has become the first woman to win a Republican primary in US history by defeating former president Donald Trump in the Republican primary in Washington DC. This is her first victory over Trump in the 2024 campaign to become the Republican presidential candidate. She lost in South Carolina, her home state and Trump has a huge lead over Haley and is likely to face Joe Biden in the November election, report mentions. Read the full report here.
