NDTV on shops opening in Leh as curfew relaxes
NDTV reports that the residents of Leh City in Ladakh are enjoying the relaxation of the curfew on Thursday. The streets are crowded with vehicles and pedestrians after the shops opened, as part of the relaxation permitted by the administration. The report adds that the markets will open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm today, providing relief to people who are finally able to step outside of their homes. Read the full report here.
India Today on Rahul Gandhi in Colombia
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again accused the ruling BJP of eroding India’s democratic fabric, this time while addressing students at EIA University in Colombia. India Today reports that Speaking at an interaction on Thursday, Gandhi said he remained “very optimistic about India” because of its cultural diversity, technological strength, and healthcare system. But, he cautioned, the country faced serious risks. Gandhi also drew a sharp contrast with China. Read the full report here.
Dozens feared dead in Indonesia school collapse, BBC reports
There are "no signs of life" under the wreckage of a collapsed Indonesian school where 59 people are still missing, rescuers have said. BBC reports that hundreds of students, most of them teenage boys, were inside the two-storey Islamic boarding school in the town of Sidoarjo when it collapsed on Monday. At least five students were killed and about 100 injured, officials said. Thirteen people have been freed from the debris since rescue efforts began, though two later died in hospital. Rescue operations had been challenging due to the unstable structure of the building, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Hindustan Times: Hyderabad student assaulted during 'Dandiya' event
A 21-year-old engineering student was assaulted during a 'Dandiya' programme organised at a hotel, Hindustan Times reports, allegedly by a group of participants, police said on Thursday. The incident happened on September 29. The report says that the student, in a complaint to police, stated that he went to the event with two friends and while he was playing dandiya, two unidentified persons beat him, resulting in minor injuries. Israel intercepts flotilla ships, detains activists: Al Jazeera live report
Israeli forces arrested activists, including Greta Thunberg, on board the Global Sumud Flotilla heading to the Gaza Strip after intercepting their boats, Al Jazeera reports. It adds that about two dozen activist vessels carrying aid are still sailing towards besieged Gaza including one that entered its territorial waters. As the boats near Gaza, the Sumud Flotilla has made live video available for the safety of those on board. Israel has sworn to stop the Gaza-bound flotilla claiming the volunteers are trying to “breach a lawful naval blockade”, but international law is clear on allowing humanitarian aid through, the report adds.
