The Hindu: Countdown for India’s first solar observatory mission starts

The countdown for the launch of India’s first solar observatory mission Aditya-L1 has commenced at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, The Hindu reports. The Aditya-L1 spacecraft is scheduled to be launched by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) on September 2, 2023 at 11:50 am from Sriharikota. This is the 59th flight of the PSLV and the 25th mission using the PSLV-XL configuration, the report mentions. It also adds that the PSLV will launch Aditya-L1 spacecraft in a highly eccentric earth-bound orbit. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express report on INDIA bloc's resolution after Mumbai meeting

 

The Opposition’s INDIA grouping, which has been brainstorming in Mumbai for the last two days, formed a 14-member coordination panel, Indian Express reports. The leaders said that they will soon be coming out with the seat-sharing formula among its members for next year’s Lok Sabha polls. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the strength of the Opposition’s INDIA alliance is making the ruling government “nervous”, the report adds, amid the Centre’s latest proposal for ‘One Nation, One Election’. Fresh search on for Johannesburg fire victims, BBC reports

South African firefighters have gone back inside the Johannesburg building destroyed by fire on Thursday to see if they can find any more bodies. BBC reports the blaze, in the overcrowded and condemned five-storey building, claimed 74 lives. It included 12 children. The fire service says it wants to be sure that no-one has been left behind. The cause of the fire remains unknown, the report adds. Some of those who use such buildings in Johannesburg include undocumented migrants, mostly from other African countries, it says. Karnataka HC disqualifies Deve Gowda's Grandson as LS MP, NDTV

NDTV reports that the election of JD(S) Member of Parliament from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna, was declared null and void by the High Court of Karnataka on Friday. Justice K Natarajan in his judgment partly allowing the two petitions filed by G Devarajegowda, a voter from the constituency, and A Manju, the then BJP's defeated candidate (2019 LS polls) also directed the Election Commission of India to take action against Prajwal Revanna for election malpractice as per the Conduct of Election Process Rules. s the grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. The report says he is the only candidate from the party to have won the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka in 2019. The petitions had claimed that Revanna indulged in election malpractice and did not declare his assets to the Election Commission. Read the full report here.

 

Palestinian killed in crossfire after Israeli raid, Al Jazeera reports

 

A Palestinian man has been shot and killed by Israeli forces during a raid in an occupied West Bank town. Al Jazeera reports this was following a confrontation that resulted in a building being destroyed. The report mentions that Abdul Rahim Fayez Ghannam, 36, was shot in the head in Aqaba, north of Tubas and pronounced dead at the local hospital on Friday. Israeli forces raided the town looking for Ahmad Walid, who they accused of carrying out a shooting attack near a checkpoint in the Jordan Valley last month. Read the full report here.
