Indian Express explains SCs 10 pc EWS quota

 

The Supreme Court upheld by a 3:2 majority on the 103rd amendment to the Constitution introducing a 10 percent reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions to educational institutes and government jobs, reports Indian Express. According to the report, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Bela M Trivedi and JB Pardiwala agreed that the amendment does not violate the basic structure of the Constitution. On the other hand, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat disagreed. Read the full report on Indian Express.

 

BBC Live Science blog talks about rich nations pushed for climate compensation as leaders meet

BBC reports that the world leaders will discuss tackling climate change at the 27th Conference of Parties to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27UN) summit in Egypt. The report says that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will call for a “global mission for clean growth” at the summit. According to the UN, the progress on cutting emissions that cause global warming has been “woefully inadequate” since the last year. The report also adds that the poor countries are pushing for financial compensation from the rich countries who are responsible for most of the emissions. Read the full report on BBC.

 

The Hindu reports that Gujarat HC takes Suo motu cognisance of the Morbi bridge collapse case

The Gujarat High Court (HC) took Suo Motu cognisance of the Morbi Bridge Collapse incident, reports The Hindu. The Chief Justice of the Gujarat HC said the incident was disheartening with the loss of hundreds of citizens. The report has also mentioned that the court has requested a report from the State in 10 days regarding the steps taken till now. In addition, a division bench of Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh Shastri has issued notices to the Gujarat government. Read the full report on The Hindu.

 

Reuters talks about Musk’s Twitter Mission

Reuters reports that Elon Musk lays out Twitter Inc’s mission along with other drastic measures such as sacking half the staff and charging users $8 for a verification mark. “Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission,” says Musk. This statement sprung out of debate, “accurate to who?” Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey asked. Read the full report on Reuters.  

 

SC Acquits 3 men on death row for teen’s rape-murder in 2012, NDTV

 

The Supreme Court (SC) acquitted three convicts, Ravi Kumar, Rahul and Vinod, who were awarded the death penalty by a Delhi court after being held guilty of raping and killing a 19-year-old woman in Delhi’s Chhawala area in 2012, reports NDTV. The report shares an insight into the 2012 case says that the victim’s mutilated body was found in a field, with multiple injuries due to the assault with objects ranging from car tools to earthen pots. On August 24, 2014, the Delhi High Court (HC) confirmed the punishment mentioning that they were “predators” moving on the streets and “were looking for prey”. Read the full report on NDTV.
